Is your swimming pool mobility-impaired-friendly?

Swimming pools are fun for everyone. That is even more true if the pool is able to be used by everyone in the family. Is your swimming pool mobility-impaired-friendly? This could mean someone who has difficulty walking or with mobility or for an older adult who can no longer or no longer wants to climb up and down the ladder to get into the pool.

There are many assistive devices to help people into and out of the pool and the swimming pool contractors from SwimRight Pool Service & Repair can work with you to have them installed. Swimming pools offer therapeutic and exercise benefits and are a great place for entertainment and family time.

When you have a pool it is a low-impact way to strengthen muscles or to just relax. Swimming, water aerobics and water walking are ideal exercises for people with physical disabilities or those recovering from injuries. If you’re looking to make your pool accessible to everyone, there are methods to consider.

Is your swimming pool mobility-impaired-friendly

  • If you already have a pool and are remodeling it and installing a permanent ramp isn’t feasible, you can purchase portable ramps that make getting into and out of the water easier. The ramps work well for those who use an aquatic wheelchair.
  • With in-ground pools, you can install a ramp that descends on a slow inclined slope from the deck to the bottom of the pool. It is best to build the ramp at the same time you build the pool, but it can be installed after the fact. Also, remember to install a handrail as an additional support mechanism.
  • An above-ground pool simply might not offer a way to install a ramp so you might need to consider an electronic lift as an alternative. With a lift, you sit in the seat, and it lifts you up and over the wall and lowers you into the pool.
  • A beach entry with handrails is a construction method to consider as part of the project because that is an easy way for people to get into and out of the water.
  • Ladders can be more accessible if you purchase one with a ladder, more closely spaced rungs and a wider step.

Give us a call if you’re looking for ways to make your pool accessible for everyone.

How to budget for a pool construction project

Hot enough for ya? If you live in Scottsdale, AZ you certainly aren’t amused by this question. It’s hot and only getting hotter every summer, it seems. If you have been wanting to get your own swimming pool, the pool contractors from SwimRight Pool Service & Repair offer tips on how to budget for a pool construction project.

Once your pool has been constructed, give them a call and get an estimate for ongoing pool maintenance and upkeep. Many pool owners find it costs less to hire a pool contractor than it does to maintain the pool on their own. Also, when you hire a pro you are assured the water is always safe to swim in and you won’t have to learn how to balance chemicals or buy and store them on site.

How to budget for a pool construction project

Before you begin the process of a pool project, determine your budget and stick to it. Don’t be swayed by bells and whistles that sound great but may break the bank. You can always add in other items to your dream pool in the future as your budget allows. We can give you insight into how much it may cost to maintain and keep your pool water bacteria-free and help cut back on cleaning costs.

When setting the budget here are a few things to consider:

  • Ask friends and neighbors what they paid for their pools. Call local swimming pool builders to get a rough idea on the price for an average in-ground swimming pool. Also, be sure to ask about increased utility bills. Remember you can’t simply ask, “what will it cost to get a pool” because that’s like asking, “what does it cost to buy a car” there are a myriad of variables involved.
  • Build in a 10-15% padding for the price of the completed project to cover unexpected cost overruns.
  • If you’re going to need to take out a loan for the project, give yourself a month or two before construction can begin. You can talk with your potential swimming pool builder about financing as he or she may know of a lending institution willing to help you out or you can speak with the bankers at the bank which you typically work with.

After you’ve done your homework and the project is underway, the time to plan to interview and hire a pool service contractor is now. Don’t wait until your pool is done to see if you can find a contractor who can fit you into his or her schedule. Pre-planning for a summer contract — which in Arizona can last many months of the year — is best started sooner rather than later.

In a hot housing market a pool adds curb appeal

Are you thinking of selling your house? The post pandemic sales are still booming and if you want to give your home an extra edge, your swimming pool adds curb appeal and may help you get over asking price. What is curb appeal? The first impression when someone sees your home and yard for the first time. It’s about the landscaping and it’s also about your swimming pool and how appealing it is.

When you live in Scottsdale, Arizona the swimming pool contractors from SwimRight Pools understand that a clean, crystal clear pool and its water is what will help you make that sale. Also, when you live in Scottsdale, AZ where temperatures soar into the triple digits, a new homeowner will treasure a home with a pool.

Remember, the swimming pool contractors from SwimRight Pool Service & Repair add you don’t have to be in the market to sell your home in order to improve its curb appeal and amp up the aesthetics of your outdoor living space.

  1. Paint your home or upgrade the pool’s deck with a fresh coat of paint or stain. If you have wooden furniture that’s in need of a facelift, get new cushions or add new paint or stain to freshen it up.
  2. If the area around the pool is cluttered, clean it up. Invest in storage units that double as furniture and stash toys and extra towels when not in use.
  3. Add or update lighting and in pool lighting as well. For those who swim at night, in pool lighting is a layer of safety that can keep everyone safer. Lighting also sets the mood for parties. Consider LED lights because they are long lasting and economical.
  4. Add a gazebo, shrubs, potted plants, an umbrella or an awning to add privacy and keep the sun off you in the hottest parts of the day.
  5. Consider whether you want to jump on a trend you’re seeing in magazines, online or in your neighbor’s landscaping or pool decor.

You don’t need to spend a lot of money nor do you need to do a complete overhaul on your pool nor do you have to redo everything. Small changes have dramatic appeal. Check your budget, give us a call and let’s talk about potential pool or decor upgrades.

Is it time for a lazy river pool accessory?

If you’ve ever been to a water park, chances are you have taken a ride down a lazy river. These are fun, aesthetically appealing and add to the fun and zip of your swimming pool. It’s like going down a white water rafting ride in your own Scottsdale Arizona backyard. Is it time for a lazy river pool accessory? It’s a question the swimming pool contractors from Swim Right Pools get asked quite regularly during service visits.

If you have a large enough yard, why not consider it? Bring the excitement and fun of a waterpark vacation right to your own home. The lazy river may be an unusual feature, but if you work with a trusted pool remodeling contractor in Scottsdale, AZ you may be able to have one of these features added to your own pool.

Is it time for a lazy river pool accessory?

A lazy river creates a unique experience rivaled only by a trip to water park and with the rise in coronavirus cases, why not just stay at home with friends and family?

Here are three considerations:

  1. Make sure you have at least a half an acre — or more  To reap benefits from a lazy river experience, you want it to be at least 100 feet long. If you don’t have enough space consider a circular or oval river to accommodate a lazy river within the space you have available.
  2. Add an island as part of the lazy river design. A smallish space might be large enough to accommodate a lazy river and an island with the lazy river wrapping around an island. Add creative enhancements like waterfalls, rapids or spray features. A bucket dump adds an element of surprise to the design. The lazy river should be about with a slope so the water flows about one to two miles per hour.
  3. We will work with you to ensure all safety guidelines are met. The river needs to have an easy exit into shallow enough so swimmers can stand if they need to. Handholds should be included in the design.

If this is a feature you’re looking into incorporating into your pool, let’s talk the next time we pay a service visit.

How to add shade around your Arizona pool

When the temperatures in Scottsdale, Arizona reach the triple-digit levels, you certainly don’t want to spend time outside. Even lounging around the family swimming pool isn’t enjoyable if you’re in the heat of the summer sun. In fact, it could be dangerous to be in the sun or to touch the hot deck or pool equipment! We have tips for how to add shade around your Arizona pool that is both beautiful and functional.

Don’t let hot days drive you indoors, especially if you want fresh air rather than air conditioned air. Also, if you have a swimming pool, don’t let it sit idle simply because it’s too hot to sit outside and because that cactus in your landscaping doesn’t offer much shade!

How to add shade around your Arizona pool

Old growth trees are ideal BUT in Arizona we are given cacti and palm trees — neither of which are true shade trees! If you’re fortunate enough to have shade trees, enjoy them! Here are ways to add shade to the space and get outside and enjoy the pool together before the sun goes down!

  1. A sail shade. This is a budget-friendly option and a DIYer can do it him or herself. A sail shade is weather resistant, UV-protected fabric that is stretched between three points on the patio (one of which could be the corner of the house. This shade can be moved to different points if you have the poles installed. A sail shade can lower the heat by up to 30% and that is a LOT in Arizona.
  2. A retractable awning is ideal if the pool is close enough to the house or other structure that the awning can be affixed to. A retractable awning offers options on having it opened, closed, or partially opened or closed. You can push a button and retract it or open it. An awning can be purchased in various colors and fabric materials to enhance the aesthetics of your home.
  3. A pergola or a gazebo is a semi-permanent structure that sits poolside and can offer indoor seating and a roof over your head. These are attractive but more expensive than other structures (especially a gazebo). You can construct a pergola or gazebo and plant desert-friendly greenery (succulents) to help shade the area.
  4. Low tech shade umbrella. You heard it right. A freestanding umbrella that can be staked into the ground, affixed into or on a table or on its own pole stand. You can move the umbrella from space to space and tilt it to give you just enough shade to stay comfortable.

No matter whether you go high tech, low tech or permanent, an outdoor shade space will definitely add to the enjoyment you have in and around your Scottsdale, Arizona swimming pool.

  1. Interview at least three swimming pool contractors to ensure you’re getting the best price for your money and that you’re getting the highest value and quality equipment.
  2. Know that an inground pool will cost you more, but will potentially increase the value of your home.
  3. Decide whether you want a concrete pool, vinyl liner or a fiberglass pool They each have their advantages and disadvantages and you need to understand what they are in order to make an informed decision.
  4. Where will the pool go? Ask for a bird’s eye view of your yard with the pool in place so you can see what it looks like and how it fits into the footprint of the yard.
  5. Will you need to landscape in order to have the pool, or part of the pool and deck covered so you can enjoy the pool in the heat of the sun and summer?

Don’t wait until the pool project is complete before you give us a call to come and give you an estimate on what pool service and ongoing maintenance will cost once the pool is complete. Pool maintenance is a DIY for some people, but do you want to take on that responsibility with this beautiful and expensive addition to your property? You may also find it’s less expensive ot hire a pro than to DIY the maintenance yourself.

Resurface your pool before 2021

Swim season is winding down for many areas of the country, but maybe not so much in Scottsdale, Arizona. If you’re considering a pool project, though and if you want to resurface your pool before 2021, now is the best time to talk with the swimming pool service pros at SwimRight Pool Service & Repair about getting on a schedule for that project.

The way to tell if your pool needs to be resurfaced is that the concrete looks dull and tired. If you own a concrete aka gunite pool there will be a time when it will require a resurfacing or at the very least an acid wash.

Not too many pool owners are skilled enough at the DIY to take on a pool resurfacing and will turn to their pool contractor to take on this project on your behalf. We can also let you know when you should look into a resurfacing project.

Resurface your pool before 2021

Are there reasons other than aesthetics to have the pool resurfaced? Your pool contractor will tell you yes! A resurfacing of the pool will protect the integrity of the pool. It will protect it and keep your investment protected for years to come. Safety concerns are also a reason for a pool resurfacing. Jagged cracked plaster can lead to an injury or a trip and fall hazard. As for the aesthetics — a pool resurfacing will bring your pool plaster back to life and it will be bright again. You could also decide to enhance the pool plaster by adding in quartz or a unique color theme.

Talk with us about a resurfacing project as it can be done as part of a larger pool remodel or you may decide to only have the pool resurfced. Resurfacing the pool can be done as a stand alone project or as part of an overall pool remodel. Resurfacing the pool will pay for itself in the additional years of life it adds to it.

Ask us the next time we pay a service visit whether your pool needs to be resurfaced.
